Easy Sunday: God brought us Trump

The narrator begins:

"And on June 14, 1946, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, 'I need a caretaker.' So God gave us Trump."

This isn't parody.

This is not Saturday Night Live nor something by The Lincoln Project to make Donald Trump look ridiculous.

It is up on Trump's own social media site, Truth Social.

The video piece was done in the style of radio commentator Paul Harvey's "God Made a Farmer" encomium about the hard-working farmer hero. Ron DeSantis's campaign did a version of it, which drew wide derision, including from Trump himself, who began calling DeSantis "Ron DeSanctimonious."

But now Trump posts his own version.

Why spend three minutes looking at a video about Trump? Because we are seeing myth-making and historical revision. It is underway. Trump worked farmer's hours, didn't you know? He was tireless, selfless, pious, and patriotic in his effort to serve Americans. He is a good man, heroic and honest. God gave us Trump.

There is a simple takeaway idea for readers who are trying to understand this moment in America: A great many people believe this; some of your neighbors; about half of our fellow Americans. The video makes sense to them. It inspires them. Trump inspires them.

The collective insanity that has overcome the Republican Party regarding Trump is, pardon my language, fucking astonishing to behold. I've been very skeptical of Republicans motivations and goals for a long time, but even I would have *NEVER* guessed in my worst dreams that the party of Lincoln would be openly embracing fascism and be fully in the thrall of a man as obviously morally bankrupt and corrupt as Trump.

Truly wild times and it isn't hard at all to imagine his rabid followers eating up this video. Just the other day some new polling came out that said like 65% of Republicans believe Trump is "very religious." Excuse my language again but what the actual fuck??? How can people be so completely disconnected from reality? It's one thing to disagree about what's the best tax rate or how much funding should go to Medicare, but what's going on now with Republicans and Trump can really only be compared to Germans and Hitler in the early 1930s.

DeSantis got some grief, but his version was mild, even reasonable in comparison. It never said, “So God gave us DeSantis”. And he actually is a family man who regularly attends church.

I cannot believe that more than the very most credulous diehards (15%?) buy this Trump hogwash. It goes far beyond the standard decision-making, can-do shtick. This is gross. Laughable.

Only a complete idiot could believe that Trump is pious or patriotic in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. What really inspires Trump’s chumps is his obvious contempt for the rule of law and the norms of acceptable human behavior. Any so-called “religious” appeal he enjoys comes from his willingness to humor the delusions of white Christian nationalists.

That Trump made a coup attempt is terrible. That he’s still on the loose three years later makes a mockery of American justice. That he’s running for president makes a mockery of everything America once stood for. That so much of the electorate finds him appealing indicates that our founding fathers’ “great experiment” may be a dismal failure.

Strong pass. I do believe in Jeebus Crapts, but those evangelicals (evansatanists?) have drunk the Jim Jones Kool-Aid.

This country is strongly religious, probably the most religious of all of the advanced Western countries. 400 years of immigration from Europe that selected for those with strong religious feelings was a likely factor in that.

Believing that God has chosen a narcissistic reprobate to do His bidding can be seen as just one more example of how God works His miracles in mysterious ways. It’s not my personal belief system, but it’s every bit as logically consistent as mine, or yours.

We all have to live together in this country, which means all of you sarcastic commenters have to reconcile yourselves to living among the religious. The religious probably don’t like it any more than you do, but we are all stuck with each other..

The alternative is a Civil War, but you might first want to consider which side has all the guns.

Trump is the best president Russian money can buy.

Going to church and/or having a family isn't a sign that a person has morals.

Obviously, Maggie Haberman didn't have any input on this piece. I didn't see much of any of the bothsiderism which caused me to cancel my subscription.

MT, you seem to think that Progressives and even Woke people do not also have firearms, or know how to use them. I can still shoot a one inch group at 100 yards, even though I now use a bench rest to do so, and I'm far from alone.

Michael Trigoboff said...

Ed, which group do you think has more firearms per capita?

Mike said...

MT might have a point, except the commentors here are being deadly serious - not sarcastic, and there's nothing religious about the Trump cult's anger, hatred and threats of violence. About the only thing worse than their anti-American vitriol would be letting them intimidate us into tolerating their bullying, as the people did in the Weimar Republic.

And for what it's worth, the police and military have the most guns per capita, so frankly I don't give a damn whose gun is bigger.

Ed Cooper said...

Oh, I would imagine the ammosexuals have more per capita. But they can only use one at a time. And if they're anything like the ones burning up cartons of ammunition around here, they can't hit much, either. Spray and Pray is a very inefficient tactic.

This video will, IMHO, empower trumpites. God is on their side, even if Trump is not.

I wish the layout on Peter’s blog were adjustable in size. I rarely come here following eye surgery. Can’t easily read it. Eyes get way tired.
