Easy Sunday: The invisible chair incident.

Video One, 12 seconds: Joe Biden tries to sit in an invisible chair!! He's senile!!

Video Two: Oh. Never mind.

Joe Biden with French President Emmanuel Macron

Social media sites have been passing around a short video. They purport to show that Biden is senile.

The clip shows Joe Biden unsure whether to sit or remain standing. It looks awkward, because the situation is awkward. We have all experienced it. Is it time to be seated? Are we standing for the introduction of a guest? Sit now? Sit later?

It sparked speculation:
Biden is trying to sit in an invisible chair.
     Biden has pooped his pants.
Biden doesn't know where he is.

Here is the same event, but continuing on a few moments. Now, in context, it doesn't look addled. Go to the 4-hour area and see that the event is a series of standing up and sitting down. At the 4 hour, 16 minutes, 21 second mark we see the moment in question, but when we watch a few more seconds it looks perfectly normal under the circumstances.

This is a problem Biden faces. Yes, he is old; older than I am. The question is whether he is too old and whether he is fully capable of doing his job. The State of the Union address gave Biden a chance to show himself looking vigorous and able over a stretch of time. The debates will be key for Biden. He must demonstrate that the abbreviated clip is not the real Joe Biden, and that the real Joe Biden can speak and act with forceful clarity and wisdom. A showdown debate is a risk he needs to take. It could make him or destroy him.

You can’t blame Trump’s supporters for lapping up such obvious crap. They’re just poor, hapless victims of the elites – like Trump. They don’t want some old guy for president who shuffles and makes gaffes. They want an old guy with 34 felony convictions who waddles and entertains them comments like this from his New Jersey rally: "The late, great Hannibal Lecter. He's a wonderful man. Congratulations, the late, great Hannibal Lecter.”

Trump can’t find his ass with both hands in spite of its size, but that doesn’t matter because he has plenty of psychophants ready and willing to locate and kiss it for him.

A video editor has the power to select just the right (or wrong) clips to string together to show just about anything they want to show. You can see short clips of animals doing funny things. You can run the odd clip forward and back over and over to emphasize the point. You can use AI to generate a completely false event. Watching Biden start to finish, on what was a gruelingly long ceremony, he demonstrated to me that he has the chops to do the job. Full stop.

My sense is that these memes are a net zero. Maybe even more people are offended by the juvenile ("p**ped his pants") and dishonest attack than persuaded.

Both men are old, both campaigns are doing these kinds of attacks. Both sides hope they will move the needle. I don't think so, they just cancel each other out.

Physical infirmities aside, Trump's rhetoric should be the differentiator. He recently said, "I never said lock her up", which is either a flat out lie or dementia.

Oh, and maybe the conviction?

It occurs to me that Republicans have gone to all this effort, years of scheming, to corrupt the Court, delegitimize every American institution, and trash the election system just to prop up a candidate who has taken over their party and looted it for his own benefit.

Now, that's "p**ping your pants.
