Easy Sunday: Dispatcher: "Do you need police, fire, or medical?"

The San Francisco 911 dispatcher was on the ball.

Paul Pelosi, husband of Nancy Pelosi, made a distress call to the 911 dispatcher.  The home invader was there beside him listening.

Pelosi had to appear to the home invader that he was calling off the police. He sounded nonchalant. Meanwhile, he had to signal to the dispatcher that he was in grave trouble and, yes, it was an emergency, send police.

There were two messages, given simultaneously, to be interpreted in opposite ways. It is easy, in hindsight, to know that of course this was a distress call. Hindsight is 20-20. It fooled the home invader. The dispatcher "got it." Maybe. That is the problem with messages hidden inside messages. Maybe she "got it" just barely enough. She did send police.

Right wing media have been full of speculation that Paul Pelosi and his assailant were lovers – further proof that what passes for “conservatism” today is a mental illness, not a political movement.

OK, I listened...Either the operator is a brilliant actress or clueless.

Mr. Pelosi caught a bit of luck.

He got 911 on the line before the attacker found him, so the attacker probably was present enough to realize that if he hung up that would be a problem, so they were able to talk. It sounds to me like the operator was running through her script, not necessarily picking up on the cues, but she may have thought this was a call from a confused elderly person. She didn't seem to indicate that she knew who Nancy Pelosi was or caught the reference to the capital police.

It's my understanding that the operator has discretion as to when they send help, so a another break is that she was sufficiently concerned to send, not the SWAT team, but one car, so it seems to me she didn't actually realize how serious the situation was. In fact it's reported that she called for a "wellness check".

So, yeah, pretty lucky all around. Wow.

Requested a wellness check makes possible sense if you don’t know who Nancy Pelosi is. He doesn’t know the guy, but doesn’t seem in distress. In hindsight it’s obvious how he gave so many cues as to what was really happening. Viewing it as an Alzheimer’s possibility it also makes sense, except the friend would have jumped in. Bravo for Mr. Pelosi.

Agreed.
Totally ignorant about facts yet quick to embrace conspiracy fantasies.

The dispatcher did what she was trained to do.
If there is doubt, you send an officer to get additional information.

This wasn't luck, but the work of skilled government employees.
