The Manafort verdict won't matter. The Mueller investigation won't matter.
Trump has his base.

Democrats who watch MSNBC and CNN and read the great national newspapers are experiencing a giant misapprehension.
Trump isn't losing. He is winning.
Trump has already stated--with pride--that he wants to stop the investigation into Russia's involvement with the 2016 campaign. He complains that Attorney General Jeff Sessions won't put a stop to the nonsense. Trump has re-defined what he is doing from criminal "obstruction of justice" into common sense ending of a partisan witch hunt. His base understands that his isn't obstructing justice. He is doing justice.
He has defined the Manafort trial as partisan nitpicking of a good man. The jury verdict won't matter, unless it is not-guilty, in which case Trump will celebrate it as proof that his definition prevails with all the people, not just the base.
Nothing Mueller finds will matter either. Assume, for example a document or set of documents existed that said "In exchange for this loan of one billion dollars Donald Trump hereby promises, if he becomes president, to allow Russia to resume control of Ukraine and serve Russian interests instead of American interests"--a version of the Zimmerman telegram of World War One era."
It would not matter. Trump would say it is a forgery, cooked up by fraudsters in the FBI. Far more plausible is a set of financial documents that document unseemly behavior. Trump will assert they prove nothing. Same with documents that showed he flagrantly underpaid his taxes. He would criticize the IRS for misunderstanding and misinterpreting the evidence.
Trump's formula works. Show no shame. Admit nothing. Assert you are completely right.
He will sell his story. Democrats and authority figures and the media will huff and puff and end up sending out a clear message: they are frustrated and powerless. Their show of helplessness will further weaken them. They will have been shown to be the can't-do party.
How can he get away with anything and everything? He delivered to his base. He cut taxes and he nominated two conservative Supreme Court justices. He did it by appealing to white racial anxiety and cut-the-fiddle-faddle assertion of executive power.
Prelude to a pardon. |
Republican voters liked it. Trump proved that Republican voters never really bought the fiscal responsibility and limited government story of the Dole-Romney-Ryan GOP. They wanted populist government that reversed the culture war sensibility on race and gender. They also wanted to reverse the regulatory hassles created by the EPA, the Disabilities Act, forest and mining and agricultural rules, fuel economy standards, voting rights, anti-discrimination rules, and all the other related hassles of being really, really considerate of others.
The progressive left pushed too many people too far, too fast. They were a little too urban, a little too condescending, a little too self righteous.
Trump came through for them, and GOP voters wanted results, not process.
Trump sold it. The ends justify the means. You cannot make an omelette without breaking some eggs. Better Trump than some Democrat.
Prediction, Manafort will go free and the Mueller investigation will go for naught.

Paul Manafort's crimes occurred in 2003, 13 years before Trump even knew him, and they had nothing to do with Russia. Manafort only worked on the Trump campaign for less than 3 months in 2016, before Trump fired him. Manafort's troubles have nothing to do with Trump.
You democrat clowns are desperate to take-down Trump.
Conversely, Hillary Clinton took a $140 million BRIBE from the Russians, and she illegally set-up a private computer network, and illegally disposed of 33,000 government emails, and you democrats don't say a fucking thing. Not one fucking word.
You folks are fucking sick in the mind. You too, Peter! You're a sick motherfucker. Your democrat leader is more corrupt than a three dollar bill, and all you can do is fabricate nonsense concerning Trump.
You're sick in the mind, just like the transsexual lifestyles your party promotes.
Life is going great for many Americans now, and you democrats can't handle it.
Notice to readers: I will leave the above comment by Curt Ankerberg up, primarily to explain to readers why I have chosen to moderate comments. In this comment Ankerberg was typical in his tone and language but the sole named target (other than Hillary) was me, and I don't mind his comment.

I sense a kind of hopelessness in the tone of your blog.
I just watched the film "Darkest Hour", and while it has a lot of typical Hollywood elements, one can't fault the rendering of history. It shows Churchill despondent facing the threat of Nazi Germany's army poised to invade England, and at the verge of capitulating to avoid war. However, seemingly at the last moment his resolve and that of the British people found the strength to resist and ultimately prevail.
While comparisons of our current politics to WWII may be a stretch, one must retain a fundamental belief in the principles that have led the civilized world to reject tyranny in all it's forms. The battles will continue.
I share your disdain for the Trump cultists, but they are a minority and in the end they will turn on him. It's the enablers that are knowingly following him for their own self interest that are a greater danger.
Curt, you forgot to take your meds. Signed, Mom.
O.K. I get why people are concerned. Please don't delete my comments, they may be controversial, but they are real. The US Constitution has a fatal flaw-- it does not provide a means for tax-paying public to remove a tyrant from office. The Alt-right has been slowly moving towards a complete assumption of all power for many years.
There are only 2 ways a President can be prevented from success in his or her goals, and Carter and Obama are examples of how this is done. Obama got ACA passed, and the Alt-right has spent every single moment since to disassemble and overprice the program. Carter was simply sidelined. The two were gentlemen, and so they did not fight dirty, and they were blocked at every turn.
The other way that Presidents can be removed is by assassination. And, please note, assassinated presidents had a common intent -- they were working toward inclusion and safety for all people. They valued democracy (with a little d.)Trump is the final step in a long, long effort to undermine the great experiment which was intended to be government by the people. Yes, they are winning, because, if the only solution is assassination, we are not the party to do that. If the solution is voter suppression, then that is not us. If the solution is to continue to build the great society, then we have lost the path. Trump will destroy it to the last vestige of civilization. We have one path to hope...That is this November mid-term election. First, everyone must work to get out the vote, and the votes must go to Democrats. Even if you don't like the candidate much, vote Democrat. Even though you want to vote Green, or Socialist to make a statement, PLEASE vote Democrat.
We must get a very strong boot on the neck of the Trumpists, or there will be no tomorrow. We might need to engage in some civil disobedience, and we may find ourselves victims of Trump's reprisals (he has shown hie temper.)We have less than 3 months to mount a revolution like we have never seen here before...but that requires the dedication of every thinking citizen. IT IS NOW OR NEVER.
