Trump's people explain their letter to Harvard:
We sent the letter.
We should not have sent the letter.
The letter is what we wrote, but it isn't what we meant.
The letter was what we meant, but it was sent too soon.
The letter was just a draft for discussion and subject to change, so we didn't really mean it.
We mean what the letter said, but not really, not yet, or maybe we did mean it, just didn't want to say it.
It was signed and sent by three top officials from a government email account on official letterhead, but Harvard should have known it was sent by mistake.
We demanded Harvard respond, but they shouldn't have responded. They should have called us to ask what we meant. This makes any misunderstanding their error, not ours.
There is no need for me to rewrite this as parody. Real-life straight news reads like the over-the-top exaggeration of parody.

The level of incompetence should be staggering, but really it’s just par for the course.
Trump is the Anointed One, here to turn the U.S. into the White Christian Theocracy that God intended. He’s often busy tooting his message – or whatever they call posting on “Truth” Social – but the Harvard letter shows that he’s surrounded himself with lackeys equally competent to fill in for him. Meanwhile, the following is the message he tooted to wish us all a sacred and blessed holy day today (I am not making this up).
Happy Easter to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting and scheming so hard to bring Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, the Mentally Insane, and well known MS-13 Gang Members and Wife Beaters, back into our Country.
Happy Easter also to the WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Judges and Law Enforcement Officials who are allowing this sinister attack on our Nation to continue, an attack so violent that it will never be forgotten! Sleepy Joe Biden purposefully allowed Millions of CRIMINALS to enter our Country, totally unvetted and unchecked, through an Open Borders Policy that will go down in history as the single most calamitous act ever perpetrated upon America.
He was, by far, our WORST and most Incompetent President, a man who had absolutely no idea what he was doing — But to him, and to the person that ran and manipulated the Auto Pen (perhaps our REAL President!), and to all of the people who CHEATED in the 2020 Presidential Election in order to get this highly destructive Moron Elected, I wish you, with great love, sincerity, and affection, a very Happy Easter!!!

There is a similar barrage of mixed signals about Jerome Powell. It reminds me of how an octopus squirts ink into the water so it can swim away unscathed. Also, creating confusion causes all but the political junkies to tune out the controversy. Whether this sowing of confusion is a tactic or just incompetence is not for me to say.
Considering the shameful capitulation of other institutions I'm not surprised that the demands were upped. Would a lesser attack on the independence of Harvard brought a similar surrender? Will there be tanks rolling down the streets of Cambridge?
I hope not.
