"There's a kind of hush --- all over the world tonight
All over the world, you can hear the sounds of lovers in love
You know what I mean."
"There's a kind of Hush" The New Vaudeville Band 1967. A Herman's Hermits hit in 1968.
The way Herman's Hermits sang it, they emphasized the word "hush" and then paused for a beat before moving on.
The half-second of silence made the song special. We heard the hush. It made the point that something big was happening -- something too big for words.
If there is a word in English for this moment in politics for Democrats, I don't know it. I am imagining some multi-syllable foreign word, something equivalent to "schadenfreude," but not schadenfreude. The word would express the overwhelming feeling of relief, and the joy and hope that comes after a prolonged feeling of dread. Biden dropped out of the race. Whew. Double-whew.
A majority of Democrats were telling pollsters that they thought Biden should not be running for re-election. It was a forbidden thought. A taboo to say it aloud publicly, because that was what Fox News was saying. Democrats whispered it. We were part of a team whose leader was in decline and maybe unfit, or nearly so. We were on a train going in the wrong direction, or a ship sailing toward an iceberg.
The situation was grim and worrisome, but I did not yet feel full-on doom. There was hope. Biden might be good-enough. Not good, but certainly better than Trump, who was a dangerous criminal who plotted to overthrow an election to stay in power. Biden didn't need to be great. He just needed to be better.
Then the debate.
There was no hiding or sugar-coating the situation. There is a word for what we felt: dread. We were doomed. We were on death row. The dread lingered on for three weeks. But then Biden's announcement. The governor called the warden and said it was all a mistake.
The word "relief" doesn't quite do it, because relief doesn't include the feeling of escape combined with joy and combined with renewed hope for the future.
The word I am looking for was done musically by Peter Tchaikovsky, in the ending moments of the 1812 Overture. Napoleon was at the gates of Russia. It was doomed, and yet against all odds and expectations, it survived! Relief! Joy! We hear cannons boom. Huge carillon bells fill the air.Da-da-da-da-dit-da-daah. BOOM! Da-da-da-da-dit-da-daah.

We need to fill that hush with support, which in the U.S. means money.
In the coming election, Americans will be making a historic choice about who better represents our nation’s values and interests: a mentally stable, experienced, intelligent, well-informed woman of color, or an old, ignorant, angry, deranged criminal who happens to be a rich white guy. How we decide will tell us and the world all we need to know about what the U.S. truly stands for.
She actually is pretty good at talking, saying things I have wanted Biden to say. The enthusiasm is palpable and pent up. I think it might just last and be contagious. We won’t go back is a nice line. Trump really is the past and as people get to know Harris I predict the independent and sane republicans will go her way. We might just survive the potential destruction of America. I really am hopeful. It reminds me of when it looked like Obama was going to win.
I'm also bouyed by the enthusiasm, and supporting Harris with my dollars, time and vote!
The contrast between her and the old orange guy is huge.
Biden's rope-a-dope worked great!
It's true. Democrats fall in love. Republicans fall in line.
In Kamala, we have a candidate with whom we can "fall in love." There's renewed energy in the race for the White House.
I wanted Biden to confront the Orange Fountain of Lies, but he just stood there slack-jawed. The look said, hopeless. Those gathered watching the debate felt it, and one said, "We're doomed.” My fingers are crossed, hoping we can sustain high excitement up to election day.
But we must do one more thing: give Kamala a Democrats-controlled House and Senate. This is our chance to make a real difference, and we must be determined to seize it.
I would like to see a 50-state campaign, a bold and inspiring initiative that would support every Democratic candidate nationwide. Let's commit to this vision of unity and progress.
Peter it's not so much a word as it is a phrase, like,
"don't count your chickens before they're hatched",
or, to be more precise,
"premature ejaculation"
"Republicans fall in line."...??
Your party elites literally just pulled a coup d'etat right in front of your face pulling down a sitting President and installing a new puppet to regurgitate all the narcissistic Marxist neofascist Democrat talking points.
Yes, neo fascist.
If you want socialism for America that makes you a "National Socialist" a.k.a. NAZI. Every single socialist state that has or does exist in the world is ruled by a totalitarian dictatorship either a dictatorship of one, or a dictatorship of an elite class. Not to mention your rabid disdain for Israel and near erotic fantasies of Islamic terrorism which you clearly admire because you are, in your heart, Violent radical terrorists who hate God and therefore hate humanity and will do anything and everything to control every facet of human existence
All of you just "fall in line" without even considering to question the completely anti-democratic machinations of your party masters.
I've been watching you all for the last 3 days gyrating and ruminating on this fantasy of unity without the least amount of any contemplation on what has just happened here.
Because the world is so constantly flipped upside down these days, Black Lives Matter agrees with me.
"She actually is pretty good at talking, saying things I have wanted Biden to say. The enthusiasm is palpable and pent up. I think it might just last and be contagious"
Yeah, like monkey pox??
To all the Daves I know... you've never really heard her speak have you?
Once you start hearing her speak without very manicured well prepared statements you'll be very much questioning that resolve.
Did none of you watch the democratic debates of 2020??
I'm telling you, the only real path to Dictatorship for Kamala Harris is in the independent candidacy of Robert F. Kennedy junior.
The most recent polling does show a shift in the fact that RFK junior is pulling more votes from Trump than he is from Harris.
I've been very concerned that this will turn into a Teddy Roosevelt Bull Moose debacle.
William Taft would have been the President in 1913 had Teddy Roosevelt not split the Republican vote which resulted in the election of Woodrow Wilson. The one President who beats Joe Biden, in a landslide, as the most destructive President in American history. Don't worry Joe Biden is the clear second for worst President ever.
This is truly a honeymoon that was called at the last minute after the bride eloped without telling the family. And the family (which is all of you) just kind of shrugs and says, congratulations
If I really could put it in one word I would say, ...disingenuous
David in Ashland –
Your use of the terms makes it sound as if you are unaware there is a difference between Marxism and fascism. There’s also a huge difference between a retirement, even under pressure, and a coup d’etat such as your cult leader attempted, which involves a lot of illegal activity. There are probably other misunderstandings, but that’s as far as I got.
Note to commenters:
Curt Ankerberg, it is dishonest and nasty to try to post comments with lustful thoughts about Kamala Harris, and attribute the comment to someone else. You represent the GOP and Trump supporters, and it makes them look bad. Do that yourself in your own blog.
David in Ashland. If you are going to state flatly as fact that Democrats tried to assissinate Trump last week, then you need to own that kind of slander in your own full name. You can't just post that anonymously. Your family, employer, neighbors need to know who posts that kind of stuff. Possibly you are an invented figment of Curt's imagination and a vehicle for saying foolish slanders in someone else's name. But if you are real, then own up. Or if you want to be anonymous, write useful things. Don't trash up my blog.

"If you are going to state flatly as fact that Democrats tried to assassinate Trump last week, then you need to own that kind of slander in your own full name."
How soon (and conveniently) they forget: The guy that tried to assassinate Trump was a registered Republican.
David (in Ashland) Miga
Miga is a Polish name meaning Twinkle, or, Sparkle. Like fireworks on 4th of July
My first Grateful Dead show was Rich Stadium, Buffalo New York, 1986. 4th of July!!!
" Red and white,
...blue suede shoes..!!"
Some girl came around and pasted biohazard stickers all over me and my friends before the show. We definitely were bio hazards that day
Peter, you and I have interacted by email, and you have access to the few videos I have on my YouTube page, although most of those videos are very old.
That would be "Dov OMega"(as its spelled) on YouTube. My avatar is a picture of one of my cats sitting in a box. I like to say that the cat's name may ...or may not be Schrodinger ...get it?
For some reason I'm not able to access my Google account on the page.
The point of that is you know what I look like.
For the sake of clarity my name really is David and I really live in Ashland, "Sunny Suthin Ashland" as I like to refer to it.
That is very far from being anonymous.
I have been commenting on your page for several years now at this point. You know quite well that my style of writing is infinitely different than Curt Ankerberg, whom I've never met, nor have I ever been to any Jackson County Republican Party functions. Hell I rarely leave Ashland. I always go on about how much I hate the idea of 15 minute cities, but the fact is, I live in a 15 minute city. Well anyway, Apparently he is your arch-nemesis
You on the other hand I know a little better because of our interactions on this page and through email as I said.
The only reason why I ever come back to this page is because all politics is local and for better or worse, you are my neighbors.
Blame it on the algorithms because several years ago your page popped into my purview.
Yes Peter all the evidence thus far shows a coordinated attempt at assassination utilizing an eager young patsy.
Seriously... do you really still believe that Lee Harvey Oswald was a lone shooter?? How many times do I have to ask this before you admit to yourself "
yeah" it is a little sus"(to use the vernacular of the day)
Come on, do you really want to go down the rabbit hole of conspiracies?
Until we have answers as to why he visited FBI headquarters in DC, had overseas bank accounts, was in a commercial for Blackrock... I'll admit that one is easier to shrug away but is still very suspicious given blackrock's reputation for being Uber globalist in their investment practices. Of course you remember ESG, Peter? You blogged about it a year or two ago. I didn't comment on that. You would actually be very surprised at how much I reserve comment then what I actually comment on.
The list goes on, but thank God It was a historical failure.
You really wanna know who dodged a bullet that day Peter? ...You did.
You, meaning all of you, and you know it, you felt it, you know that holy hell would have broke loose.
Shortly after... Joe Biden was forced to resign, and not for love of country. If he had really meant to do so he would resign from the presidency now, and let Kamala be President for the remaining months. Imagine all the good she could do in such a short time. What a great Campaign strategy.
Alas, the party masters don't like that idea at all.
Now please, o master censorian, post my reply to Mike
You forgot to mention the moon landing was fake and Obama was born in Kenya.
David in Ashland said… “Rich Stadium, Buffalo New York, 1986…Some girl came around and pasted biohazard stickers all over me”
Still toxic after all these years.
Another weekend out of my life....
