Era of Crisis

Rendezvous with destiny.

There is a school of thought that the broad outlines of human events are shaped by an overarching timetable.

The theory is that nations and cultures go through periods of rebirth, growth, maturity, and then a crisis that shapes some new status quo. The exact details are fleshed out based on the vicissitudes of elections, climate events, technological change, wars, and the personalities of leaders, but the big picture is set.

According to futurist authors William Strauss and Neil Howe in their book
The Fourth Turning, those life-cycle periods fall into approximately-eighty-year cycles of four generational “turnings.” The authors believe we are now in the final or fourth turning, which is that time of crisis when the whole system turns into something new, initiating a new era or "saeculum."

High school classmate Wayne Taylor is a molecular biologist, medical researcher, and university professor at Charles Drew University and UCLA. He collaborates with Citizens Climate Lobby to slow climate change and promote solar energy for a livable world. As a holistic “big picture” thinker concerned with ecology and the future, Wayne is a close student of the structure outlined by Strauss and Howe. Taylor wrote me predictions about upcoming events. He writes that if we get through this crisis alive, and if we work together to preserve our democracy and vote, we just might come out the other end better for it.

Are his predictions wrong? If readers think they know better, present yours in the comment section.

Consequences of the election of Trump

What can we expect in the next four years of Trump’s second term as US President? Long-term view: Cheer Up. But for now, buckle up!

It will be a chaotic and divisive time of crisis in America, with economic hardship, war, resistance, and then resurgence of Democracy hopefully in 2028. Trump will appoint MAGA extremists as cabinet heads to dismantle essential U.S. agencies like DOJ, CIA, EPA, NIH, HHS, and FDA. Anti-scientific policies from anti-vaxers like Kennedy will cause terrible health outcomes, eroding trust in agencies like the FDA. Trump will install criminals to weaponize the Justice Department to attack his critics but dismiss valid charges against himself and fellow insurrectionists.

Marginalized Americans who voted to elect Trump will be those hurt most by the coming crisis. People wanted change, so they voted against incumbent Democrats; but they will be appalled by the dumpster-fire from Trump’s mean and short-sighted policies.

Economic Hardship. Trump’s full imposition of tariffs on imported goods will impose a sales tax on Americans of about $3,500 per family. This would largely increase monetary inflation which could by 2026 damage the presently-solid economy. Protective tariffs can be beneficial, but Trump would use tariffs to selectively enrich himself, and erode the U.S. economy.

Our economy will shrink due to Trump imposing massive deportation of hundreds of thousands of immigrant workers needed for essential jobs. This lack of willing workers could cause many farms and businesses to fail. To capture these mainly Hispanic folks, ICE Police would do house-to-house searches and racial-profiling in minority work sites. This will again, as in 2017, rip families apart, separate kids from parents, and disrespect older folks, including undocumented asylum-refugees.

MAGA Republicans in Congress might succeed in Trump’s promise to kill Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, seriously hurting our economy by ending good jobs and reversing climate change remediation, to prop-up fossil industries. That would delay the economically inevitable transition from fossil fuels to less-expensive solar and wind energy. But this would not stop it, since coal is already dead. MAGA hubris and over-reach in this extreme agenda will inflame popular revulsion of Trump and resistance against his corrupt cronies.

War. After Trump takes over the U.S. government in 2025, he will withdraw military support from Ukraine, by ending funding of weapons. He will divide NATO. Trump will pose as a “Big Man” bully with Russian dictator Putin to impose a truce on Ukraine, favoring Russia annexing the Crimean and Donbas regions. We will experience worldwide wars as Putin, sensing Western weakness, attacks Armenia, Poland, or Estonia to “regain” territory. NATO and the EU would fight to defend against Russia. The stress on Russians could foment civil war against Putin. In Israel, Netanyahu will inflame the Israeli-Iranian war to retain power and escape prison. China might attack Taiwan or seize Sudan in Africa. Nuclear war is a possibility.

World War III in forms other than a nuclear exchange is another consequence of international chaos. The United States would finally go to war to support the EU after 2028, to save ourselves and European allies from attacks by Russia’s Putin, an evil Fascist like Hitler. We would also help our allies Japan and Taiwan withstand Chinese aggression. Some forms of war would stimulate the economy, but explode national debt, causing unimaginable suffering and lost lives.

Resistance. Trump will be branded as un-American for colluding on the wrong side in the war to help authoritarian dictator Putin and China’s premier Xi. Congress will renew legislation for Trump’s huge tax-breaks to billionaires, but the public will see that as massive corruption. Trump will excite his base in the culture war by pardoning criminal Insurrectionists who invaded the Capitol on January 6th. Most people will be outraged at this immoral President, causing social and political backlash against incumbent MAGA politicians. This resistance will strengthen political support for Democratic leaders, especially men like Governor Newsom, who will have protected Californians from the oppressive dictates of Trump’s administration. Governors of blue states will work together to resist un-Constitutional federal authority.

Resurgence of Democracy. In the U.S. election of 2028, Republican incumbents will be fired as a blue wave sweeps Democrats into power. Hopefully, if we win the war (the fourth turning crisis) the result will be the demise of MAGA pols at home and defeat of fascistic dictators worldwide. The winners will then establish new normal policies, including better wages for workers, women’s empowerment, renewed respect for science education and truth, with civil rights and freedom for everyone including minority citizens. It’s "Springtime in America," as the new saecular cycle begins.

One of the essential U.S. agencies Trump has pledged to dismantle that Mr. Taylor didn’t mention is the Department of Education. This is significant because it’s part of their plan to maintain power – an ignorant population is easier to control.

The resurgence of democracy in this scenario can only happen if we still have free and fair elections, and if MAGA is willing to accept the results. Both of those are a big IF. Let’s not forget, they attempted a coup after the 2020 election with little consequence and the next time they’ll have control of the military.

Considering how wrong things could go, Mr. Taylor’s speculation seems hopeful and optimistic, but as a great Yogi once said: It’s hard to make predictions, especially about the future.

Hopefully at the head would be Hakeem Jeffries, as we still don't seem to want to put a woman in charge, (tho she really came close on the popular vote) Time to get rid of the electoral collage.

Perhaps Mike can elaborate on how well the Education Department has actually performed over the past several decades

Have the several generations done better or worse since the Department of education been around?

Some facts:
- while there have been some improvements and more people went to college, we haven't produced a smarter group of voters. By your own criticism, you state that voters are not smarter as they chose to elect Trump.
- we have many students attending college that are not college ready, and many decided to take out student loans without the ability to pay off those loans
- higher education has gotten more expensive, with costs growing at a rate much faster than inflation would indicate.
- as I've noted before, just take a look at how state results for K-12 have not continued to improve across the board. States like NY, CA, and even Oregon, have K-12 outcomes that have seriously declined.

Just a few facts to consider and ponder.

As for the future Trump administration, we will all be watching closely to see if things improve. We just have to make sure we all set the right benchmarks to compare to.

Hopefully the turning will also include a return to science, something that got us to where we are now in terms of comfort, extended life expectancy…

Yes, Mike is right about the optimism of this prediction for a Resurgence of Democracy in 2028. It may seem foreboding with so many terrible events, but it ends in a better place. This is the Rosy Scenario.!!! If Project 2025 succeeds, and we don't work diligently to block it, we may end up losing our democracy. Then the turning of the cycle could get hung up in a dead-end limbo of tyranny. According to Howe (4th Turning), the cycle must not be derailed, but it must go to completion before it can be reset in a new cycle . Please, lets not go there. As Michelle said, "DO SOMETHING"

Instead of Yogi Berra, with his quote of the old Danish adage about how especially hard it is to predict the future, I prefer Yogi Bear. This Thanksgiving, how about let's all just GET ALONG.? Talk to that dear old Uncle. Ask questions and listen. like, "Can't we do better than That? This is America!"
Really, Liar, Con-man, Rapist? Grifter?

Yes, Mike is right about the optimistic tone of this projection into the future. IF we don't lose our democracy, then we may come out allright. The pendulum of history swings. Turn, Turn, Turn.

In spite of the terrible events described, This is the "Rosy Scenario". !!! But if Project 25 succeeds, and the press is attacked, education is subverted, and we lose freedom of speech, etc. etc., then this land could descend into Tyranny. Howe argued that if the 4th Turning cycle is blocked from completion, then we may get locked into a limbo. So let's not go there. Please work to defend our vote and our democratic institutions. As Michelle said, "DO SOMETHING"!

Instead of Yogi Berra's old Danish adage about the difficulty especially of predicting the future, I want to recommend, Yogi Bear's Thanksgiving.

Talk to your dear old Uncle this Thanksgiving, and just ask, "Can't we do better than THIS?" Hey, this is America. Freedom. Democracy. Justice for all! (not just white men).

As a science educator and biomedical researcher in the Universities of Oregon, Wisconsin, Washington (UofW), and California (CDU and UCLA), it's been painful to see how anti-science this administration is, with Cabinet pics such as Bobby Kennedy Jr.. The rejection of science goes along with rejection of facts, and denial of Truth, or even that there is such a thing as Truth.

So we really need to have a rebirth of education and respect for facts. I don't know where to begin, but perhaps all the way back to gradeschool, and even preschool, and the two-year-old growing up in their own family. But even schools and education has become the battleground in the culture war.

The federal Department of Education oversees the U.S. government's education assistance to the states. It's the states that mandate curricula, graduation requirements, etc. Thus, the states whose voters were ill-informed enough to elect Trump are the product of the states' Department of Education, not the federal.

Let's not forget the damage done on a personal level.

How many Americans are no longer living due to Don Old's policies and statements during his first awful administration? We know there were 200 thousand excess COViD deaths because of him.

Mike said...

I'm aware that Yogi Berra didn't say all those things he said, but since the quote is commonly attributed to him, why make it complicated.

M2inFLA said...

That doesn't quite explain Oregon's education results, now, right?

Why is Oregon's K-12 outcomes near the bottom when compared to the other states?

Mike said...

Wayne Taylor has raised serious concerns about the consequences of Trump's election. I don't see how your focus on Oregon education applies, unless it's just a diversionary tactic.

I predict that every prediction made right now will turn out to be wrong for reasons that we can’t even imagine at the moment.

Mike said...

I predict, with 100% certainty, that Trump will cause us a world of hurt, based on the fact that he already has.

M2inFLA said...

Mike, respectfully...

You were the one that started with Education, and I was responding to that.

Democrats and Progressives have been in charge in Oregon, and today's situation in Oregon belongs to the house leaders. Not Trump, Biden, or even Obama.

You just wrote:

"I predict, with 100% certainty, that Trump will cause us a world of hurt..."

Change that to "...will cause some of us..." to make it a bit more accurate.

At least half of the country, and perhaps more elected Trump. Not all of us.

Months ago I stated that this was a never-Biden vs never-Trump election. I updated that to never-Harris vs never-Trump.

Too many votes for never-Harris, resulting in Trump winning the election.

There are many, including me that will welcome Trump's leadership over the next 4 years, and perhaps Vance after that.

To focus on blocking his efforts is just as bad as Trump denying the 2020 results.

How about a better understanding of why the Senate, House, and the White House are now Republican. Right now it looks as if you, Mike, are now in the minority of the US, even though Oregon is still a solid D.

Mike said...

“You were the one that started with Education, and I was responding to that.”
As I thought I clearly explained, I was referring to Trump’s pledge to dismantle the federal Department of Education.

But you’re right. Trump’s contempt for the Constitution and rule of law will only affect those who care about them, and his tariffs and deportations are unlikely to hurt his wealthy supporters.

Wayne, I recently watched a short documentary on CBS Sunday Morning, where Finnish schools were starting in Kindergarten teaching children critical thing skills as well as several languages, advanced mathematics, etc etc. IT CAN BE DONE. The Finns are #1 amongst the first nations for education. I think the U.S. is in the 40's.

M2inFlorida brings up some interesting points that I want to talk about. The main theme is that Trump won the election and Republicans now control the Senate, House, and Executive government as well as Supreme Court. Why did this happen, and how could it hurt the R half of the country who voted for him? My thesis is that economic hardship and war will probably result from Trump imposing tariffs, expelling immigrant labor, killing infrastructure jobs, and not standing up to Putin's bullying in Europe. This coming economic recession will hurt everyone, whether you voted for Trump or not. Red-state folks will probably be hurt even more than average, because the farm business jobs and infrastructure job benefits that would be destroyed by Trumps policies were predominantly in the rural areas that voted Republican. For instance, what would a small farmer do if the one hospital in their small town was forced to close , you couldn't hire laborers, and the market for Soybean sales to China tanked?

I realize that people voted for Trump in the rural countryside partly for anti-incumbent sentiment and economic reasons, but there were predominant culture-war themes that trumped the economics. The desire to return to the "good old days" when men ran things and white guys were on top. That's Trump's vibe which white men bought, to the extent that over 60% of white men voted for him, while 77% of black men voted for Harris. The deciding factors in this election were cultural bias, sex, and race. Don't ignore the elephant in the room, even if it looks sort of deplorable, even to a white male like myself.

About that so-called Mandate? Trump got less than half of the popular vote, so the majority of the country voted against Trump. That was a very close election. The electoral college would be tipped to Harris by only 175,000 votes in key battleground states of PA and WI and MI. So it is not only justified, but necessary for the anti-Trump majority of this divided nation to not just resist these short-sighted MAGA policies, but to organize and fight as hard as possible to block their agenda for 2025. Support the ACLU to use lawsuits to delay the implementation of the Un-constitutional over-reach which is sure to come from Trump's extremist cabinet officers. Support the governors and legislatures of states such as CA, OR, WA, NY, IL etc to thwart executive-czar imposition of immigrant roundups based on profiling.

The harm from Trump's extreme anti-science agenda and economic ignorance will be painful enough even if we work hard to resist it. So my overall belief is that people will be so sick of Trump and his cronies by the next four years, that Americans will Vote-them -away in 2028. It should be a real house-cleaning and a fresh start for the new century cycle.

PS: Trump's denial of Biden's win in 2020 was disproven by 59 lawsuits in court, so it is simply NOT True. There is no moral equivalence. I would argue that Trump is not a legitimate President because he is not eligible to hold office due to his Insurrection, which is banned by the Fourteenth Amm. Sect. 3 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court's Alito and Thomas should be recused, but they made a wrong decision, and there is clearly no justification for broad Presidential Immunity. So I am justified in stating, "He is not my President". My loyalty is to the US Constitution. Wayne

I couldn't agree with you more. The problem is that it isn't possible to reason with people don't believe in facts. Having been in the medical field, I know providers who tried to convince RFK, Jr fans during the pandemic that vaccinations are good. They'd rather die of stupidity. Trying to convince a Republican that Trump didn't win the 2020 election is the same story. So now they've abandoned any pretense of caring about the rule of law and put a traitor back in the White House. What could possibly go wrong?

M2inFLA said...

Wayne, some good in what you wrote, but also some wrong.

The stats disagree somewhat of your conclusions. It was a tight race, but Trump did receive at least 50% of the vote, and far more than many previous winners, with a few exceptions. Quantity wise, few have received as many votes as Trump did.

The vote was rather simple: he got enough of both the popular as well as the electoral votes.

Whatever he said or did was enough to vote for anyone other than Harris

Harris's main deficiency was not explaining what she would do differently or better than Biden if she were elected.

Bottom line, she lost and Trump one

As for his picks for his administration, it looks to be a slate he thinks will change what got us here. History will be written, both good and bad.

The prognosticators will be revising things over the next r years. And if Trump is not successful, there will be others running who will hopefully make things better.

For more news, be sure to check out VP Harris's recent comments released yesterday about her loss.
