Easy Sunday: Philadelphia Inquirer editorial says it is Trump, not Biden, who should quit

Donald Trump should exit the race for the good of the country.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reverses the polarity of The New York Times' editorial.

The Philadelphia Inquirer editorial:

President Joe Biden’s debate performance was a disaster. His disjointed responses and dazed look sparked calls for him to drop out of the presidential race.

But lost in the hand wringing was Donald Trump’s usual bombastic litany of lies, hyperbole, bigotry, ignorance, and fear mongering. His performance demonstrated once again that he is a danger to democracy and unfit for office.

In fact, the debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump.

Trump, 78, has been on the political stage for eight years marked by chaos, corruption, and incivility. Why go back to that?

To build himself up, Trump constantly tears the country down. There is no shining city on the hill. It’s just mourning in America.

Throughout the debate, Trump repeatedly said we are a “failing” country. He called the United States a “third world nation.” He said, “we’re living in hell” and “very close to World War III.”

“People are dying all over the place,” Trump said, later adding “we’re literally an uncivilized country now.”

Trump told more than 30 lies during the debate to go with the more than 30,000 mistruths told during his four years as president. He dodged the CNN moderators’ questions, took no responsibility for his actions, and blamed others, mainly Biden, for everything that is wrong in the world.

Trump’s response to the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection he fueled was farcical. He said a “relatively small number of people” went to the Capitol and many were “ushered in by the police.”

After scheming to overturn the 2020 election, Trump refused to say if he would accept the results of the 2024 election. Unless, of course, he wins.

The debate served as a reminder of what another four years of Trump would look like. More lies, grievance, narcissism, and hate. Supporters say they like Trump because he says whatever he thinks. But he mainly spews raw sewage. . . .

I couldn’t agree more! The confrontation between Biden and Trump wasn’t a debate. If it had been an actual debate, the biggest liar wouldn’t be considered the winner.

Those who abhor fascism are rightly alarmed at the thought of voters returning Trump to the scene of his crimes and handing him the power to finish sabotaging our democracy. On the other hand, if the American people care so little about their republic, is it worth saving?

It’s conceivable that Joe Biden would respond to calls for him to resign for the good of the country. No one is dumb enough to think that Donald Trump would respond to a call like that.

Dump Trump! That is the goal at the ballot box or through the GOP Convention.

Both candidates are at the extreme of the age range, but Biden still seems grounded and sane, although not up to the street brawl Trump brought to the stage. Biden brought a record of achievement to the cage fight of lies.

Biden is currently at Camp David with his family. We can only wait and see what the way forward will be at this moment. Both directions appear ominous, but another four years of Trump will be a disaster. Buckle up!

I hope that the consistent readers of this blog tuned in to the Presidents North Carolina speech.
The Philadelphia Inquirer is spot on its analysis. Had everybody forgotten how badly Barack Obama tanked his first Debate against the Window Mannequin Rmoney ? And the came back to crunch the Mittster in November ?

An addendum: JFK, by most unbiased a counts, lost the first Debate to Nixon. One bad night does not a Campaign make.

The convicted criminal told at least 30 lies during the debate. I think this line from the editorial Peter quotes says it best:

"Yes, Biden had a horrible night. He’s 81 and not as sharp as he used to be. But Biden on his worst day remains lightyears better than Trump on his best."

The eToys billionaire is gonna take a big hit tomorrow and a trial for unofficial acts should start in September, prob around the same time George Stephanopolous asks Trump who won the 2020 election in the 2nd debate. I’m counting on democracy to prevail.

Biden didn’t just have a bad night. He had a jaw-droppingly disastrous night. The spin machine is already on overdrive. In fairness, so to speak, Democrats have little option but brazen minimizing and denial.

Biden also lied multiple times. “No American soldiers died” on his watch? Drug costs yearly for seniors capped at $200? Try $2000. Billionaires pay 8% in tax? Etc., etc. (We’ll just call “trillionaires” a gaffe).

Denial, river, Egypt? Maybe it’s really the only way forward.

Sorry, Mr. Dudgeon, but there’s simply no equivalence in quality or quantity between the lies of Trump and Biden, or the degree of denial needed to minimize Trump’s crimes compared to Biden’s lousy debate performance. Biden’s bad night doesn’t change the fact that he’s an honorable, decent human being and Trump is a criminal scam artist.

It’s a difference in degree, not kind, when it comes to the standard lies. The same goes for Biden’s character and history overall. At the peak of his powers he was forced from the 1988 presidential campaign after being exposed as a serial liar, concerning his plagiarism and standing at school, and concerning his identity theft in stump speeches from British pol Neil Kinnock—first family member to college (lie), top part of his graduating class (lie), grandfather in the coal mines emerging after a shift to play football with the kids (lie). Then he denied the plagiarism and the cheating, before being exposed, and then withdrawing in disgrace. Obama inexplicably picked him from the scrap heap for his supposed—nonexistent—foreign policy chops. Biden is a lesser-included version of Trump when it comes to self-promoting fabulism. It continues to this day. Biden is a disgrace, as Trump is, though to a less dangerous degree than golem or Godzilla Trump. America suffers at this choice.
